Day Three: 11th Feb
Marigold Dye Extraction & Resist Techniques by Monoleena Bannerjee from Kolkata
What will you learn?
This masterclass explores the vibrant potential of marigold as a natural dye, focusing on extraction methods and resist tie-and-dye techniques rooted in heritage practices. Participants will gain hands-on exposure to creating patterned surfaces while understanding how traditional resist methods translate into contemporary textile applications and sustainable production systems.
About the Facilitator
Monoleena Banerjee is an accomplished Textile Artist, Designer, Consultant, and Educator with over three decades of experience.
Marigold is one of the most generous plants in the natural dye world. Its petals yield a warm spectrum of yellows, golds, and soft oranges, colours that feel like stored sunlight.
Traditionally used across India for rituals and celebrations, marigold carries cultural memory as much as colour. As a dye, it is valued for being locally abundant, biodegradable, and low-impact, making it ideal for sustainable textile practices.
When combined with resist and tie-dye techniques, marigold transforms fabric into layered surfaces — where pattern, pigment, and process become visible. Each piece reflects the hand of the maker, the rhythm of tying, and the time taken for colour to emerge.
In a world facing ecological imbalance, marigold reminds us that colour can be seasonal, circular, and kind to the earth.

Day Three & Four: 12-13th Feb
Image making using the Body with Natural Dyes by Tasneem Lohani from Bangalore
What will you learn?
Day 1: Painting Through the Body
We will begin with gentle body-movement exercises to help you loosen up and connect physically with the act of drawing and painting. These exercises are designed to prepare your body and mind so that creativity can flow naturally.
Next, you’ll be introduced to simple conceptual prompts for which we will look for visual inspiration, drawing from nature. Together, we’ll step outdoors for a guided foraging exercise, where you’ll observe plants and trees around the workshop space—looking closely at their patterns, textures, and colours.
Using these observations, you’ll create free, experimental drawings guided by body movement. We’ll start by painting on paper using Colour Ashram’s natural watercolour paints, and then move on to painting directly onto cotton fabric using Colour Ashram’s natural fabric dye paints.
Day 2: From Painting to Textiles and Garments
On the second day, we’ll take the painted fabrics further. You’ll learn how to properly wash, fix, and cure your dyed textiles so they are ready for long-term use.
We’ll then display everyone’s work and come together for a group sharing and feedback session. This will be a relaxed discussion where we explore how these paintings could translate into textiles and garments.
To deepen this understanding, we’ll look at examples of fashion designers who use conceptual and artistic processes in their work. Through these references, you’ll learn how abstract ideas and personal expression can be transformed into wearable pieces—and how you might apply these approaches to your own creations.
By the End of the Workshop, You Will:
1. Learn how to use body movement and intuition to create expressive drawings and paintings.
2. Understand how to work with Colour Ashram’s natural watercolour paints.
3. Learn the complete process of painting, washing, and curing fabric using Colour Ashram’s natural fabric dyes.
4. Discover how to draw inspiration from nature—such as patterns, textures, and forms—to develop imagery in your own unique style.
5. Gain insight into turning artistic concepts into textile designs and garments.
